How to use email marketing to reach new readers?

Email marketing is one of the oldest marketing methods, and it's not just old, it is also very effective. This makes it one of the best ways to connect with your readers and grow your audience. The best part about it is everything is in your control. No algorithms messing with your reach. Let’s discuss how you can use email marketing to bring new readers into your world.

1. Start Building Your Email List the Right Way: Treat your email list as your treasure. The people on your email list want to hear from you. They will be happy to join if they receive something valuable such as sample chapters of your book or even a free eBook as a thank-you for signing up. Add a sign-up form to your website or blog. Use social media to let people know about it.

2. Send a Welcome Email (It’s Like a Virtual Handshake): Don’t leave your subscribers hanging. Send a welcome email to them. Think of it as an opportunity to say, “Hey, I am happy to have you here!” In the welcome email, you can share something about what inspires you to write, about your journey as a writer and this is the time for you to give them sample chapters or a free eBook. Let your subscribers know what they can expect from your emails. Keep the welcome email warm and personal.

3. Give Them a Reason to Stay Subscribed: Consider what you would want to see if you were a subscriber. If it’s exciting or useful, you’re on the right track. Nobody would like to read emails where you only promote your book. Instead, focus on giving your readers something valuable. For example, you can share behind-the-scenes stories about your writing process, give updates on your next book, and recommend books you love (bonus points if they’re in the same genre), Offer exclusive content, like deleted scenes or character profiles.

4. Make It Personal: While reading a message or an email we feel good when people talk to us directly, isn’t it? Similarly, it is essential to use the subscriber’s first name in your greeting. For example, Hi Shreya, here’s a sneak peek for you. Pay attention to what your readers are interested in and plan to send the emails accordingly because this shows that you are paying attention to what they like or dislike to know more and people appreciate it.

5. Consistency Is Key (But Don’t Overdo It): Imagine someone is sending you an email every day or not sending an email for months. What would you do? Unsubscribe it, right? Now, let’s discuss what you can do about it as a sender. Maintain a schedule and send an email either once a week, twice a week, or monthly, and stick to it. Your goal should be to add value to the lives of your subscribers by being consistent in providing something valuable and humorous. You can reach new readers and make the best use of your email list only when you send the emails with all your heart and be the real you.

6. Make It Easy to Take Action: Knowing the purpose of an email will help you to get the best results out of it. Let's discuss how you can make it easy for your subscribers to take action.

Use one or two clear buttons or links. Keep the call-to-action (CTA) short and direct. For example, “Click here to grab your free story.”  Don't add too many options because that can confuse your subscribers.

7. Think Mobile First: There are chances that most of your readers open the emails on their phones. This is how you can make your emails mobile-friendly:

  • Write short paragraphs because it is easy to read on a small screen.

  • Keep the design simple.

  • The subject of the email should be short.

8. Pay Attention to What Works (and What Doesn’t): It is always important to analyze your email marketing strategy to get better results. Ask these questions to yourself:

  • Are your subject lines working?

  • Are people taking the actions you want?

  • Why people are unsubscribing (if any)

Experiment with different approaches and Understand what your readers like because it will help you to modify your strategies whenever it is needed.

Email marketing is all about building relationships. Start small and stay consistent. Over time, you’ll grow a loyal group of readers who can’t wait to hear from you—and, more importantly, read your work.
